The Byre
Low Mill, Farndale, North York Moors National Park
This project involved the sensitive conversion of a Grade-II listed dilapidated argicultural building (piggery) located in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.
The building had suffered from decades of neglect and was close to collapse when we started investigating options to bring a new lease of life to the historic asset. The linear structure did not lend itself to conversion to a multi-bedroom unit, so a decision was made to create a truly unique luxury one bedroom holiday let.
Existing partition walls were retained where possible and sensitive opening up was permitted by the National Park where required.
Bramhall Blenkharn Leonard Architects worked closely with the National Park to restore the fabric of the property sensitively with full hot-lime repointing and insulating hot-lime plaster. The building is heated with UFH over a breathable limecrete insulating slab.
The home is serviced by the plant room, in the Oak Barn, and this has enabled us to maximise functional space within the building. Vaulted ceilings bring height to an otherwise reasonably tight space, and the half depth entrance lobby allows for a spacious ensuite bathroom behind.
A new log burner has been installed in the sitting room, and the stunning stonework has been exposed in parts to emphasise the building’s history. The Byre has a south facing, enclosed, private garden, beyond which is a newly established wildflower meadow making for an exceptionally sympathetic viewpoint.
Working with Jessica Brook Interiors and Harland Builders, the project was completed in August 2022 and is available to book through Farndale Cottages.
